Abstract

Ovaj rad komparira zavisne karipske teritorije koji u različitim oblicima kao svoje suverene priznaju europske države – Veliku Britaniju, Francusku i Nizozemsku – ili su pak integralni dio istih. Uspoređujući povijesne, političke, kulturološke i ekonomske čimbenike, rad pokušava odgovoriti na pitanje – postoji li mogučnost za ostvarivanjem neovisnosti zavisnih karipskih teritorija, te u kojoj mjeri je to njihov stvarni interes. Kroz prikaz povijesnog tijeka kolonizacije Kariba, nastoji se omogučiti bolje razumijevanje političkog uređenja i socio-ekonomskih prilika koje su na pojedinim otocima prisutne danas. U daljnim zasebnim analizama prikupljaju se relevantni podatci o britanskim, francuskim i nizozemskim teritorijima, koje se se kasnije promatra u zajedničkom kontekstu. Na kraju rada, argumentira se da u većini slučajeva navedenim teritorijima odgovara zavisan odnos naspram bivših europskih kolonizatora, te se njihov položaj u doglednoj budućnosti neće mjenjati.

Abstract (english)

This paper compares dependent Caribbean territories which in various degrees either recognize Great Britain, France and Netherlands as their sovereign states, or form an integral part of said states. Focusing on historical, political, cultural and economic aspects, the paper aims to answer the following question – is secession towards a full autonomy a viable option for the dependent territories, and if it is, is it in their best interest? By presenting a historical background, the author attempts to make better understanding of the present day situation in the Caribbean region. Further analysis of the British, French and Dutch dependencies provides relevant information which is later set side by side in a wider context. At the end of the paper, an argument is made that in most cases, the territories in question are better off with their current status, which is not going to change in the foreseeable future.
