Abstract

Maritime security is national security. NATO has provided a component of ensuring this security for years. Although its relevancy has been questioned before (Kfir, 2018), NATO faces continued pressure from a changing U.S. international rhetoric and the EU’s quest for cooperative security autonomy (Tardy, 2018). Does the EU maintain enough organic naval resources to provide for its own combined security? I will provide a historical breakdown of the importance of maritime strategy towards national security, qualitatively analyzing factors of naval strength and current events to create an overall equation to quantify my weighted data. This equilibrium equation will provide insight to the current status, trends, and possible outcomes of the European common defense strategy towards maritime security. With a resurgent Russia and economic and security challenges within Europe, can the EU absorb the loss of NATO, or more specifically, the U.S.?

Abstract (croatian)

Pomorska sigurnost je nacionalna sigurnost. NATO je godinama pružao komponentu pružanja ove sigurnosti. Iako je njegova relevantnost prije dovedena u pitanje (Kfir, 2018.), NATO se suočava s neprestanim pritiskom zbog promjenjive američke međunarodne retorike i potrage EU-a za kooperativnom sigurnosnom autonomijom (Tardy, 2018). Da li EU održava dovoljno organskih pomorskih resursa za pružanje vlastite kombinirane sigurnosti? Donijet ću povijesni pregled važnosti pomorske strategije za nacionalnu sigurnost, kvalitativno analizirajući čimbenike pomorske snage i trenutne događaje kako bih stvorio opću jednadžbu za kvantificiranje mojih ponderiranih podataka. Ova jednačina ravnoteže pružit će uvid u trenutni status, trendove i moguće ishode europske zajedničke obrambene strategije prema pomorskoj sigurnosti. Uz rastuću Rusiju i ekonomske i sigurnosne izazove u Europi, može li EU nadoknaditi gubitak NATO-a, točnije SAD-a?
