Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze how the Syrian refugee crisis effected the EU-Turkey relations and seeks to answer what dimension will it affect the other existing issues in the following years. In 2011, after the political demands of the demonstrations in the framework of the Arab Spring, the repressive response of the Assad regime triggered the civil war in Syria which made millions of Syrians refugee in various countries.
Turkey already accommodates over 3.5 million Syrian refugees and expects exact solutions on burden-sharing policies from the EU. Many refugees are expected to be resettled in the EU member states. Delaying financial assistance to Turkey and inert resettlement commitments of the EU raises the concerns of Turkish government recently. Although the agreements function relatively well in preventing the life loss of many immigrants in the Aegean Sea, they are incapable of putting an end to the refugee crisis. The disputes are still on the table to be solved and the agreements are needed to be revised in the near future.
