French foreign policy from Mitterrand to Hollande: Change or Continuity?

Abstract

This research tried to identify the major features of French foreign policy by studying the foreign policies of the last four French presidents: François Mitterrand (1981-1995), Jacques Chirac (1995-2007), Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2012) and François Hollande (2012-2017). This was done by examining key allocutions delivered by the French presidents over the period of 1981-2017, as well as archives and the official documents of the French government. It has been shown that the foreign policy of the Fifth Republic has been characterized by continuity in its goals and objectives. These aimed to maintain French rank and influence in the world, to preserve the country’s nuclear autonomy, and to promote international law, democracy and multilateral cooperation.

Abstract (croatian)

Cilj ovog rada je identificirati glavne karakteristike francuske vanjske politike proučavajući administracije posljednja četiri francuska predsjednika: François Mitterrand (1981-1995), Jacques Chirac (1995-2007), Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2012) and François Hollande (2012-2017). To je učinjeno proučavanjem govora predsjednika, kao i oslanjanjem na ostale službene dokumente francuske vlade. Studija je pokazala da, ono što je značajno za vanjsku politku Pete republike je kontinuitet u vanjskopolitičkim ciljevima. Oni su u glavnini bili održavanje položaja koji Francuska ima u svijetu, očuvanje nuklearne autonomije, promocija međunarodnog prava, demokracije i međunarodne suradnje.
