Abstract

Hladni rat bio je vrlo važan događaj koji je promijenio povijest ne samo dviju najvećih sila u sukobu, Sjedinjenih Američkih Država i Sovjetskog Saveza, već i cijelog svijeta. Sukob dviju najvećih sila doveo je do potencijalne prijetnje svih država što je bilo ključno spriječiti. Nixonova administracija provela je vrlo aktivnu vanjsku politiku koja je bila temelj za označavanje kraja Hladnog rata. U vrijeme Nixonove administracije dolazi do jednog od najtežih političkih skandala u povijesti Sjedinjenih Američkih Država poznatog pod nazivom afera Watergate. Watergate se smatrao složenom mrežom političkih skandala koji su se dogodili od 1972. do 1974. godine u vrijeme Nixonove administracije što je u konačnici rezultiralo njegovom ostavkom. Glavno istraživačko pitanje je: Kako je afera Watergate utjecala na razvoj Hladnog rata?. Pretpostavka istraživanja jest kako je Nixonova administracija imala velik utjecaj na pojavu politike detanta te je na taj način saznanjem o aferi Watergate došlo do ubrzanja te politike detanta u Hladnom ratu. Cilj istraživanja, osim opisa afere Watergate, jest prikazati utjecaj Nixonova predsjedništva u okviru vanjsko-političkog utjecaja Hladnog rata.

Abstract (english)

The Cold War was a very important event that changed the history of not only the United States and the Soviet Union, the two greatest superpowers in the conflict, but of the entire world. The conflict between the two greatest superpowers could have led to a potential threat to all countries which had been crucial to prevent. The Nixon administration pursued a very active foreign policy that was the basis for marking the end of the Cold War. During the Nixon administration one of the biggest political scandals in the history of the United States known as the Watergate Affair took place. Watergate is a complex network of political scandals that occurred from 1972 to 1974 during the Nixon administration that ultimately resulted in the president's resignation. The main research question is: How did the Watergate affair affect the development of the Cold War? The research premise is that the Nixon administration had an immense influence on the emergence of the détente policy, and thus the knowledge of the Watergate affair accelerated said détente policy in the Cold War. The research goal, in addition to describing the Watergate affair, is to show the influence of the Nixon presidency in the context of the external political influence of the Cold War.
