Abstract

Ovaj rad prikazuje reprezentaciju društvenih vrijednosti u medijima kroz znanstveno-fantastičnu seriju „Zvjezdane staze“. Istraživanjem prikaza roda, rase, seksualnosti, rata i etičkih vrijednosti u odabranim epizodama, analizira se narativ kroz simbole i konvencije fiktivnog društva. Znanstvena fantastika kao žanr često prikazuje ili komentira opće stanje društva i društvene pojave. Relevantno je analizirati kako takva popularna serija prikazuje društvene probleme, kako ih rješava i koje vrijednosti promiče zbog veličine publike koja ju prati i mogućeg negativnog medijskog utjecaja. No, popularna se kultura ne mora spominjati samo u negativnom već se o njoj može govoriti i u pozitivnom. Velik broj radova proučava „Zvjezdane staze“ iz perspektiva poput psihološke, filozofske ili čak političke, no rijetke su analize narativa po epizodama. Ovaj rad analizirao je šesnaest epizoda kroz četiri različite serije iz franšize. Rad je ujedno i monografija o povijesti, utjecaju i razvoju same franšize, s posebnim osvrtom na prikazane društvene vrijednosti i probleme. Analizom serija u franšizi utvrdilo se kako prikazan svijet u seriji nije toliko utopijski i savršen kao što je uvriježeno mišljenje. Franšiza promiče pozitivne društvene vrijednosti i potiče publiku na razmišljanje o prikazanim situacijama koje često odražavaju stvarne društvene probleme, ali postoje fundamentalne razlike između pojedinih serija. Usporedbom starijih serija sa serijom iz 2017., očito je kako je došlo do napretka u reprezentaciji društva. Najnovija serija sadrži najveću raznolikost manjina i rodnih uloga i veći broj ženskih uloga, a starije serije sadrže više epizoda kojima je cilj slanje pozitivnih moralnih poruka.

Abstract (english)

This paper demonstrates the representation of social values in the media through the science fiction series "Star Trek". Narrative is analysed through symbols and conventions of fictitious society by exploration of gender, race, sexuality, war and ethical values in selected episodes. Science fiction as a genre often shows or comments on the general state of society and social phenomena. It is relevant to analyse how such a popular series shows and addresses social problems and which values are being promoted given the size of the audience and the possible negative media influence. Popular culture does not need to have negative connotations but can be referred to in a positive context instead. A large number of papers study "Star Trek" from a psychological, philosophical or even political perspective, but narrative analyses of episodes are rare. This paper analysed sixteen episodes through four different series of the franchise. Paper also serves as a memoir on history, influence and development of the franchise itself with particular reference on the displayed social values and problems. Through the series franchise analysis, it was found that the world presented in the series is not as utopian and perfect as the conventional opinion often dictates. Franchise promotes positive social values and encourages audience to reflect on situations that often show real social issues, but fundamental differences between individual series do exist. Comparison of the older series and the 2017 one, illustrates that progress had been made with regard to the representation of society. The latest series contains a widest variety of minorities and gender roles as well as a greater number of female roles, while the older series contain more episodes aimed at sending positive moral messages.
