Abstract

Industrijska i Francuska revolucija stvorili su uvjete za razvoj moderniteta. Industrijskom revolucijom došlo je do masovnog tržišta i gomilanja ljudi u gradovima, a Francuska revolucija najavila je masu kao važnog političkog aktera. Walter Benjamin opisuje te dvije pojave kao ključne točke europskog devetnaestog stoljeća. Čovjek moderniteta nalazi se u stanju blaziranosti, a kolektivni osjećaj je melankolija. Njena prisutnost ima dva ishoda: jedan je pražnjenje ljudskog duha i nemogućnost pridavanja važnosti vanjskim fenomenima, a drugi je mogućnost duboke kontemplacije koja odlikuje flaneura. U tom dijalektičkom odnosu nazire se mogućnost izbavljenja iz okova punog moderniteta koji će se utjeloviti u fašizmu i nasilničkoj politici neslobode koja dolazi s njim. Benjamin smatra potrebnim svrgnuti porobljivačku magiju koja čini jezgru moderniteta jer se samo raskrinkavanjem mita o progresu može postići stanje slobode.

Abstract (english)

The Industrial and the French revolution have both created the proper conditions for the development of modernity. Industrial revolution has brought along a massive market trade and an accumulation of people in urban areas. The French revolution, on the other hand, inaugurated that mass of people as an important political protagonist. Walter Benjamin has described these two phenomenons as key points of the european nineteenth century. A blase attitude is seen as an important feature of the modern man, while the common feeling of the collective can be described as melancholy. Its presence is distingushed by a dual ramification: firstly, the inanition of human spirit followed by an inability for attaching meaning to outer phenomenons; secondly, capacity for deep contemplation, evident in the character of the flaneur. In the dialectic of that relationship looms the possibility of deliverance from the shackles of the, so called, full modernity, with violent fascicst political agenda being its most horrific example. Benjamin seeks to subvert the enslaving narrative which constitutes the core of modernity, seeing that only completely shattering the myth of progress could lead to a true state of liberty.
